Inspired by the piano transcription of the famous 彩云追月(Colourful Clouds Chasing the Moon) that my mother and I loved listening to, I wanted to compose something that was evocative and had similar grandeur as well.
花影 (Flower Visages) is divided into four distinct sections that can be easily identified by the changes in character, articulation and tonal centres. The music begins with an undulating passage of fourths accompanied by flowing arppegiac motions. I always felt that this particular passage was especially evocative of the title as it felt like it set the scene and tone of the piece. I always imagined it to be an idyllic landscape where layers of flower petals are falling softly onto the ground, with a river gently flowing beside it. The lyrical main theme is then introduced within a thicker musical texture. It should be noted that the music is sometimes coloured by acciacaturas, tremolos and glissandos as I attempt to invoke the timbre and technique of certain Chinese instruments.
